Zapier's New Interface: Is It a Step Forward?
Zapier just dropped a new look, and the question on everyone's mind is: did they nail it, or is it just lipstick on a pig? I've spent the last few days kicking the tires on the revamped Zapier, and here's my unfiltered take.
Remember when connecting apps felt like untangling Christmas lights? Zapier swooped in and made it (mostly) painless. But let's be honest, the interface was starting to feel a bit…dated. Well, folks, Zapier just dropped a new look, and the question on everyone's mind is: did they nail it, or is it just lipstick on a pig?
I've spent the last few days kicking the tires on the revamped Zapier, and here's my unfiltered take.
What's New (and Shiny)?
The biggest change is the visual overhaul. It's cleaner, brighter, and generally easier on the eyes. The dashboard is less cluttered, and finding your Zaps feels less like a scavenger hunt. Zapier is also touting improved collaboration features, allowing teams to work on automations together more seamlessly. This includes better commenting and version control – features that were sorely needed.
Another notable addition is the AI-powered Zap creation. Tell Zapier what you want to automate in plain English, and it'll attempt to build the Zap for you. Sounds amazing, right? We'll get to that in a minute.
The Good Stuff:
Sleek Design: No more feeling like you're using software from the early 2000s. The new interface is modern and intuitive. Improved Navigation: Finding and organizing your Zaps is much easier. Collaboration Boost: The new collaboration features are a welcome addition for teams.
The Not-So-Good Stuff:
AI Hype vs. Reality: Okay, the AI Zap builder is…ambitious. While it can handle simple automations, it often struggles with anything remotely complex. I asked it to create a Zap that adds new Google Contacts to a specific Mailchimp list, and it completely missed the mark. It's a cool concept, but it needs serious work. Learning Curve: While the new interface is generally intuitive, there's still a learning curve. Some users might find the changes disorienting at first. Also, the new interface may slow down the experienced user who is used to the old locations of buttons and features. Pricing Still a Pain Point: The changes don't address Zapier's biggest problem: the pricing. It's still expensive, especially for small businesses. You quickly hit limits on the number of Zaps and tasks you can run each month.
Is It Worth the Upgrade?
For existing Zapier users, the new interface is a worthwhile upgrade. The improved design and navigation alone make it a better experience. The collaboration features are a major plus for teams. However, don't expect the AI Zap builder to be a game-changer just yet. It's more of a novelty than a reliable tool.
Zapier vs. Make (formerly Integromat): The Low-Code Showdown Continues
Zapier's refresh comes at a time when the low-code automation space is heating up. Make (formerly Integromat) has been nipping at Zapier's heels with its more flexible pricing and powerful features. While Zapier's new interface is a step in the right direction, it doesn't fundamentally change the game. Make still offers a more compelling value proposition for users who need complex automations and don't want to break the bank.
The Bottom Line:
Zapier's new interface is a welcome refresh, but it's not a revolution. It's a good step forward, but Zapier still has work to do to stay ahead of the competition. The AI features need improvement, and the pricing remains a barrier for many users.
